Heritage Snap! Awards NOW OPEN!

The City of Launceston's Heritage Snap! photography awards for students were put on hold due to COVID-19 restrictions earlier this year, but with restrictions easing and students returning to school, we have now re-launched the awards for 2020.

Entries are now open and will close on 31 August.  Shortlisted entries will be displayed in a public exhibition in September.

Visitors to the exhibition will be able to vote for their favourite entry and for t he first time we will offer a Peoples' Choice award with a $500 voucher for photographic equipment going to the overall winner.

Further details are provided on the attached flyer, but as a quick reference:

  • Heritage Snap! is open to all primary and secondary students in the north of the State
  • The theme for the 2020 awards is 'Should I Stay or Should I Go?'
  • To address this year's theme each submission will require:

- a digital image

- text providing an explanation of the interest in the subject and why it should 'stay' or 'go'

  • Entries can be uploaded via a form accessible from the City of Launceston's Awards web page - www.launceston.tas.gov.au/Awards
  • Entries close 4pm, Monday 31 August 2020

If classes can't be taken on field trips, we hope that teachers might like to use the competition as the basis for activities that students can undertake on their own, or with parents or guardians, and also that if students are informed of the awards, that they may wish to participate independently, as is often the case.

It would also be greatly appreciated if you could assist us in spreading the word to anyone who may be interested (via your email and social media networks and any other means). The attached information flyer may be emailed or printed and posted in any location which may be seen by others.

As always, if you need any further information, please call me on 6323 3370 or email: heritageawards@launceston.tas.gov.au

Peace

170px-Peace_sign.svg.png

Peace is the concept of harmonious well-being and freedom from hostile aggression. In a social sense, peace is commonly used to mean a lack of conflict (such as war) and freedom from fear of violence between individuals or heterogeneous (relatively foreign or distinct) groups.

Throughout history some of the most extraordinary and benevolent leaders have used peace talks to establish a certain type of behavioral restraint that has resulted in the establishment of regional peace or economic growth through various forms of agreements or peace treaties. Such behavioral restraint has often resulted in de-escalation of rhetorical and physical conflicts, greater economic interactivity, and consequently substantial prosperity. The avoidance of war or violent hostility can be the result of thoughtful active listening and communication that enables greater genuine mutual understanding and therefore compromise. Leaders often benefit tremendously from the prestige of peace talks and treaties that can result in substantially enhanced popularity.

“Psychological peace” (such as a peaceful thinking and emotions) is perhaps less well defined yet often a necessary precursor to establishing "behavioral peace." Peaceful behavior sometimes results from a "peaceful inner disposition." Some have expressed the belief that peace can be initiated with a certain quality of inner tranquility that does not depend upon the uncertainties of daily life for its existence.[1] The acquisition of such a "peaceful internal disposition" for oneself and others can contribute to resolving of otherwise seemingly irreconcilable competing interests.

Match: 7.55 pm Kick off Vs Vic Park Boys

Game History: This Season – Loss 3-0 (L3-0, L1-0)

Result: Loss 1-0

Game Comments: While it was as always, a disappointing loss (because all losses are) this one was somewhat expected. Having said that the performance we put in when compared to last week was phenomenally better. While the scoreline and result shows a loss there was a significantly improved spirited performance all around. Playing against the top team we always knew it was going to be hard to take the points but we played well and we had a number of chances to score also. Could have been a 3-3 shootout or a 10-3 loss so being a 1-0 loss isn’t too bad in perspective. They scored midway through the first half but no team really took the ascendancy at any stage. While we are still a mathematical chance for finals we need to win the 3 winnable games we have ahead to even sneak into 4th.

Notable mentions:

Goat – Great first game of the season, supported both ends well and definitely made an impact in defence.

V – The stalwart defender who wants to be a midfield, brought his pace to the flanks that had been missing.

Timbo – Ran his heart out, awe inspiring in defence, created a number of chances up front. Classic.

What made us look the part:

Support – While it clearly made us tired there wasn’t a noticeable moment when we didn’t have 2 defenders (eventually) or 2 attackers (eventually).

What made us not look the part:

Squad Depth – With a list of ring ins and a base squad of 8 we still couldn’t manage to have a sub leading into the game (with 2 ringers already).

Player rankings: Premier League Transfers (Ins)

Barnesy (Seydou Doumbi – Will have a lot of pressure on his shoulders if he isn’t able to produce magic quickly.) Out sore and with a holiday looming made the call to not risk injury.

Timbo (Jonjo Shelvey – Creative hard man to add depth to a squad struggling at the moment.) The everywhere man had nothing short of a pearler of a game (if you don’t consider the fact that he didn’t score). High ball fine has been paid out of his kitty buffer.

Timmy (Matt Miazga – Not sure how much action he will see but he has signed on for a bumpy ride.) Other than the one that snuck in had a relatively good game, came off his line well and caused headache for the opposition.

Henry (Wahbi Khazri – In for a scrap and a dog fight to make his name known around the world.) Out of the state for some reason, assumed work.

Toon (Emmanuel Emenike – A powerhouse ready to leave his mark on those in his wake.) Out late with other things on his horizon.

Deano (Steven Naismith – No doubt he has goals in him just needs to find his feet.) Settled nicely into the midfield after his week off and took on the opposition with every opportunity and with class too.

Goat (Oumar Niasse – Brings so much more to the table that some of the others on the list. Just what you need.) For his first run out in a long time clearly wasn’t showing the signs of any lack of fitness. Supported both ends well.

V (Andros Townsend – Clearly a talent to keep an eye on just needs to get the chances to show his worth.) Added and x-factor to the team wasn’t able to trouble the scorers but his impact running about the place we clear.

Memorable Moment: - Pav Of The Season – Should have, would have, could have but it just want to be. About halfway through the second half there was a patch of play that would have gone down in folk lore. Timbo received the ball in attack and seemingly instantaneously fired in an absolute cannon from what feels like just past the half way line, although im sure it was closer to the top of the box than that. The ball was travelling so quickly that it beat the keeper and smashed into the post, bouncing back underneath the keeper who was still diving from the initial shot and into his hand. A second earlier on the dive and the ball would have been in the back of the net off the keeper which would have put us back on level ground with time for either team to push on for the win, however it just wasn’t to be.

To look forward to:

Dear Parents,

Peta.jpgAs students will now be spending vast amounts of time with their teachers and friends, it is important to remember the significant role of parent engagement with student learning.  Educating our children is one of the most important tasks parents have. Education is vitally important for every child and is every community’s most valuable resource. As parents, we all want our children to do the best they can, but sending them to school is only part of the picture – how well we parents engage with our children’s education has significant impact on their learning. Research tells us that schools perform best when families, communities and schools share the education opportunity equally with students. Please take time each day/week to enthusiastically and positively discuss your child/ren’s learning or homework they are engaging in.

Our P&F Meeting will take place in two weeks’ time on Monday 5th August at 2.00pm.  We are trialing this new time as it may be more convenient for parents to come early to pick up their child and then depart at 3.00pm.  We encourage parents to come along to join our wonderful team.  Your involvement is greatly appreciated.

Presently, our School Satisfaction Survey is open and is a very important process for our school.  This is part of our ongoing commitment to continuously improving the school.  We believe it is critical to seek each parent’s opinion on a range of issues relating to St. John’s. Your feedback is very important to us as we continue to build a successful school and strengthen our reputation as an ‘educator of choice’. As such, we have engaged the professional services of MYPCorp to undertake a strictly private and confidential School Results Survey on our behalf. The survey should take approximately 10 - 15 minutes and will need to be completed by Monday 5th August. There are no right or wrong answers and we ask that you respond honestly to each statement. Please note that this survey will be confidential. No member of the leadership team will have access to your individual responses. The school will be provided with a summary of collated results only. You will continue to be sent friendly reminders during the survey period until you have submitted the survey. If you do not receive your survey instructions on the survey start date, please check your spam and junk email folders. While we strongly encourage you to participate, the survey is not compulsory. If you decide that you do not want to complete the survey, simply click ‘Unsubscribe’ in the instruction or reminder email. Thank you for your assistance in helping to shape the future direction of our school.

Next Tuesday, we look forward to Catholic Education Week celebrations.  This year’s theme, Many Voices, One Spirit, has been chosen for its promotion and support of inclusiveness. The ‘Many Voices’ represent the voices of students, teachers, families, communities, parish, social services and government within all five dioceses in Queensland and include students of all educational ages (kindergarten to university) and beliefs. ‘One Spirit’ will be interpreted differently by different audiences and could include for example: faith, the Holy Spirit, charisms, or school spirit, team spirit, parish spirit and family spirit. The theme brings feelings of energy, enthusiasm, love, joy, values, relationships, togetherness, learning, unity and belonging – all ideals relevant to Catholic schools in Queensland. To celebrate Catholic Education Week, we head off to Good Counsel Primary School next Tuesday.  A parent slip was released on Tuesday 23rd by email for you to give permission for your child to attend.  Thank you Mrs Gaia for assisting in coordinating this very special event.

Finally, I invite you to come to school assemblies each Friday as we now have ‘state of the art’ technology facilities in our hall and I now call it with a smirk and immense pride – ‘St. John’s Conservatorium of Music.’

‘The thankful heart will find, in every hour, some heavenly blessings.’ – Henry Ward Beecher

God Bless, Peta Bryan
