Callum Copy Test 2

Dear Parents,

Peta.jpgAs students will now be spending vast amounts of time with their teachers and friends, it is important to remember the significant role of parent engagement with student learning.  Educating our children is one of the most important tasks parents have. Education is vitally important for every child and is every community’s most valuable resource. As parents, we all want our children to do the best they can, but sending them to school is only part of the picture – how well we parents engage with our children’s education has significant impact on their learning. Research tells us that schools perform best when families, communities and schools share the education opportunity equally with students. Please take time each day/week to enthusiastically and positively discuss your child/ren’s learning or homework they are engaging in.

Our P&F Meeting will take place in two weeks’ time on Monday 5th August at 2.00pm.  We are trialing this new time as it may be more convenient for parents to come early to pick up their child and then depart at 3.00pm.  We encourage parents to come along to join our wonderful team.  Your involvement is greatly appreciated.

Presently, our School Satisfaction Survey is open and is a very important process for our school.  This is part of our ongoing commitment to continuously improving the school.  We believe it is critical to seek each parent’s opinion on a range of issues relating to St. John’s. Your feedback is very important to us as we continue to build a successful school and strengthen our reputation as an ‘educator of choice’. As such, we have engaged the professional services of MYPCorp to undertake a strictly private and confidential School Results Survey on our behalf. The survey should take approximately 10 - 15 minutes and will need to be completed by Monday 5th August. There are no right or wrong answers and we ask that you respond honestly to each statement. Please note that this survey will be confidential. No member of the leadership team will have access to your individual responses. The school will be provided with a summary of collated results only. You will continue to be sent friendly reminders during the survey period until you have submitted the survey. If you do not receive your survey instructions on the survey start date, please check your spam and junk email folders. While we strongly encourage you to participate, the survey is not compulsory. If you decide that you do not want to complete the survey, simply click ‘Unsubscribe’ in the instruction or reminder email. Thank you for your assistance in helping to shape the future direction of our school.

Next Tuesday, we look forward to Catholic Education Week celebrations.  This year’s theme, Many Voices, One Spirit, has been chosen for its promotion and support of inclusiveness. The ‘Many Voices’ represent the voices of students, teachers, families, communities, parish, social services and government within all five dioceses in Queensland and include students of all educational ages (kindergarten to university) and beliefs. ‘One Spirit’ will be interpreted differently by different audiences and could include for example: faith, the Holy Spirit, charisms, or school spirit, team spirit, parish spirit and family spirit. The theme brings feelings of energy, enthusiasm, love, joy, values, relationships, togetherness, learning, unity and belonging – all ideals relevant to Catholic schools in Queensland. To celebrate Catholic Education Week, we head off to Good Counsel Primary School next Tuesday.  A parent slip was released on Tuesday 23rd by email for you to give permission for your child to attend.  Thank you Mrs Gaia for assisting in coordinating this very special event.

Finally, I invite you to come to school assemblies each Friday as we now have ‘state of the art’ technology facilities in our hall and I now call it with a smirk and immense pride – ‘St. John’s Conservatorium of Music.’

‘The thankful heart will find, in every hour, some heavenly blessings.’ – Henry Ward Beecher

God Bless, Peta Bryan

Welcome back to Term 3. We have several special celebrations happening in our community this term. These begin with Catholic Education Week next week. This week is an opportunity for Catholic schools in Queensland to celebrate and promote their distinctive mission and ethos. As well as activities teachers will do with their classes, we will all celebrate next Tuesday by joining with students and staff from St Clare's Tully, St Rita's South Johnstone, St Rita's Babinda, Good Counsel Primary School and Good Counsel College in Innisfail. You are welcome to join us for the Mass which begins at 10am.

Thursday 15th August is the Feast of the Assumption of Mary; a holy day of obligation. We will have a whole school Mass at 9am.
On Wednesday 21st August at 6pm, several of our students will be receiving the Sacrament of Confirmation. This is always a special Mass presided by Bishop James. At Mass on the following Saturday night, 24th August at 6pm, these students will complete their initiation into the Catholic Church when they receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist, "the source and summit of the Christian life".
Please add these dates to your calendar, and join us.

Social Justice Issues

A sincere thank you to all the kind school families and parishioners who donated to our SVDP Winter Appeal.  The goods were kindly collected by the Tully Branch of SVDP at the end of Term 2 and they were very much aprreciative of our collection of food, clothing and blankets.  These items have been distributed to needy members of our community.

We are now into Term 3 and have a busy time ahead of us.  Knitting and sewing crafts will officially commence in Week 5 when the ladies from the Silkwood CWA will be joining us to assist the students on Tuesdays with knitting our Trauma Teddies and helping to make Fiddle Blankets for the residents of the Tully Nursing Home.  Students wanting to knit or sew can prepare by sourcing knitting needles size 4 and 8 ply wool.  Some material is available at school.

Please mark the following dates in your diaries:

  • Saturday 17th August - We will be holding a disco after the Year 2/3 Mass
  • Friday 30th August - Our Mini Vinnies Sleepout for the homeless.

More information on these in the coming weeks.

Come and have a look at our Nature Play project! It's all starting to take shape.  The students of St John's will be enjoying this space very shortly.

Our next P & F meeting will be on Monday 5th August at 2.00pm.  Note the new time.  This should suit more parents to join us in the library before they collect their children at 3.00pm.

Our Term 3 calendar has been sent out. This term we have some special dates planned including a visit from the Silkwood Ambulance Officers, participation in the Premiere's Reading Challenge and Book Week, Science Week and Week 9 Assembly at St Johns, a Father’s Day family get together and a visit by Pirate Pete! We also have a quarterly Parent Meeting set for Thursday 8th August at 2:45pm.

Over the first week of Term 3 at Kindergarten we were able to see how much our vegetable garden had grown!! If you are in need of lettuce or rocket we are the place to come! We also noticed that our Beetroot looked ready, so we dug them up and made a yummy, pink beetroot dip!

We have had lots of fun with our Puppet Theatre – taking turns to create and perform a puppet show. This is such a great play experience to help us to think about the stories we can make up – the characters involved and how the story will unfold. With a little practice the children were getting the knack of storytelling and we look forward to hearing and seeing more puppet shows as the weeks go on.

We had Jace bring in a cardboard plane which everyone loved the look of. We decided to create our own planes with the many varied craft items we have in our craft space. When the children are given the creative freedom to follow their own ideas with a range of resources, they engage in active learning and produced some wonderful unique things. We had sea planes, planes with many wings, landing gears and propellers that spun!

We are on the lookout for an old microwave for use in our sandpit. We have had to throw out the one we currently were using as it broke beyond safe use, but it is an item that the children love and use alot! So, if you are upgrading your microwave, or know of someone who is, please keep us in mind.

Yours in play, Miss Cheryl and Mrs Greco
